FAQs
What makes our chasen different?
Each chasen is handcrafted through 12 meticulous steps by skilled bamboo artisans. We use the traditional 真(しん / Shin )shape — structured, precise, functional. Shaped for a steady, comfortable grip.
Every chasen comes with an aluminum case — perfect for travel, as a thoughtful gift, or as a reusable matcha storage tin. Designed with a no-waste mindset, every piece serves a purpose.
Why is blooming the chasen important?
Before every use, place the chasen in hot water (80–85°C) for 30–60 seconds. This allows the bamboo to absorb moisture and regain flexibility.
It improves elasticity, reduces tip breakage and extends lifespan.
Blooming is part of the matcha ritual.
How long does a chasen last?
If you use your chasen once a day, a chasen typically lasts 2–6 months with proper care.
Lifespan depends on:
Frequency of use / Blooming habit / Storage environment
Bamboo is a natural material. Wear over time is expected.
How do I clean my chasen?
Rinse with clean water only. Do not use soap.
Shake off excess water. Air dry upright or on a whisk holder.
Avoid closed, humid storage.
If my chasen has a crack in the handle, can I still use it?
The chasen can develop a crack in the handle portion over time, and sometimes even before purchase. Dry air, especially in Nordic winters, can cause bamboo to shrink. Bamboo reacts to humidity.
Minor cracks do not affect performance. If the handle remains firm, the chasen can still be used. Replace it only when the structure becomes unstable.
To reduce cracking:
- Bloom before each use
- Keep away from heaters
- Store in a breathable space
Is the chawan dishwasher safe?
Hand washing is recommended.
Dishwashers may damage ceramic and glass due to heat and sudden temperature changes.
Care preserves the surface.
